Who We Are

Our Story, All ‘About Us’

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less
traveled by, and that has made all the difference” – Robert Frost

We’re working-age full-time Rvers, who grew tired of working day in and day out so we can run away from our jobs every time we turned around. We’ve been camping most of our lives, working our way through a variety of tents, pop-ups, travel trailers and our current pride and joy, a 37 foot 2018 Montana High Country fifth wheel. Our full-time adventures officially began in March 2020 when we sold our home and the majority of our ‘stuff’. We hooked up the ‘fiver to our dually and headed out from our home base in Northern Arkansas. Our kids are in their 20’s and off adulting so it’s just the two of us for the first time (Kate and I met when our kids were two and three). The plan was always to take our ‘circus’ on the road full-time, but it was going to be
a few more years in the future.

November 14, 2018, the day life changed.

Kate suffered life-threatening complications after a surgery on her way from post-op to ICU. We were told it was a scene out of a medical drama, carts slamming, people running, broken ICU room door, all to save my beloved’s life. I thank God each day that He gave the expertise to the medical professionals. The first 16 hours of her eight day ICU stay was with her unconscious and on a ventilator. Sixteen hours of prayers, unending thoughts and holding her hand. Life as we knew it had changed in an instant.

Once Kate was home from the hospital, on the road to recovery, we had many conversations about our future and what it would look like. ‘Things’ were no longer important to us. Our ‘things’ had become the boss and we realized we full-time jobs caring and managing our ‘things’. This was not part of the what we wanted our life to look like. What became more important than ever to us was to relish each moment, see the country, have adventures and quality time with family and friends. We put the wheels in motion to sell our home and downsize our things. When we pulled out of the driveway after the sale of our home, we had what we needed in the ‘fiver and a storage unit held the balance of our worldly goods we had kept. A new chapter began.

Kate, after being self-employed for many years was ready to transition to the next phase. She loves reading, outdoor activities, photography, cooking, crafting (she is on a mission to try her hand at everything Hobby Lobby offers) and our fur babies. Kate had been a volunteer firefighter, first responder, and loved driving the fire engine. Now I just have to convince her that pulling the ‘fiver is just as much fun.

A while back, Kate read a couple of books and started following a few blogs on simplifying your life and allowing yourself grace. It seemed harmless at first, but I didn’t realize how much it would change our lives. Probably one that had the most impact was ‘Grace Not Perfection’ by Emily Ley. I can’t explain the switch that was flipped in my wife, but it’s been incredible. We now live more purposefully. Our lives aren’t cluttered with so much stuff. We could of never considered full-time rv’ing before these changes.

I’m Shane, the luckiest guy on Earth for having found the perfect wife. I love butter pecan ice cream, anything mechanical, outdoor activities, balloon animals, and kaleidoscopes. I am the head designer for Wander and Reflect. I have a degree in Manufacturing Engineering and worked in plant-turnaround and application development for 25 years. The skills I brought to those careers have helped me dabble in all sorts of things and now I’m working to make them useful. As a retired volunteer fire chief, I miss the excitement and adrenaline of the fire department, but I’m doing my best to adapt to middle-age and full-time rv life.

Kate and I love to fly kites and are amassing an impressive collection. We also love Christmas and decorating for Christmas. We were the house on the block that had the Christmas light show. I love the joy Christmas lights bring to people, I just haven’t figured out yet how to take a 16′ foot digital Christmas tree with us on the road. Together, we have owned a handful of businesses including real estate appraising, database programming, a high-end baby furniture retailer and consulting services for retailers and manufacturers. We hope you enjoy Wander and Reflect, as it was born out of our love for RVing, rockhounding, faith, fun, creativity, and so much more. So, sit back, browse our decals and shirt designs. Catch up on our latest happenings, thoughts or product review in Kate’s blog. We will see you around the campfire!
